Political and financial capital of Nova Scotia

Halifax is in Halifax County, in the province of Nova Scotia. It is on Halifax Harbor. The regional municipality is the provincial capital.

The community was named for the second Earl of Halifax.

Thousands of loyalists from Boston and later, New York, sailed here during and after the American Revolution.

The city was established in in 1749 as a British naval and military base.

Many of the passengers who drowned when the Titanic snak were brought to Halifax for burial.

More than 1,600 people were killled, and much of the north end of the city was destroyed, after a 1917 collision of two ships in the harbor. A French munitions ship and a Belgian relief vessel crashed, causing an explosion that decimated families and wiped out 325 acres of the city.

The regional municipality of Halifax was formed in 1996, with the merger of the cities of Halifax and Dartmouth, the town of Bedford and Halifax County.
