The community is roughly bounded by Sherbourne Street to the west, Wellesley Street to the north, Sumach Street to the east, and Gerrard and Shuter streets to the south.
The community features extensive numbers of Victorian homes, which were built between 1860 and 1895.
For much of its history, the area was a slum; in the 1950s, its worst homes were demolished and replaced with the Regent Park housing development.
In the 1970s and 1980s, improvements began to occur, making the community one of Toronto's most gentrified neighbourhoods.
