2001 population: 6,330 (Source: Statistics Canada) Ponoka is a town in the province of Alberta. It is in the Battle River Valley. The town name derives from Blackfoot for "elk."

The community arose, in 1891, out of its location along the Calgary-Edmonton Trail. Four years later the Canadian Pacific Railway arrived in the community.
