At the intersection of Water and Carrall streets, in 1867, the first business on the Burrard Inlet opened. It was a saloon.

Streetcar service began in 1890.

By the beginning of the 20th century, the center of downtown had moved to Granville Street.

In 1974 general traffic on Granville Street was disallowed, creating a semi-pedestrian mall with a focus on mass transit.

Local festivals include:
· Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival - March 22-April 30, 2007
· Alcan Dragon Boat Festival - June 16-17, 2007
· Mid-Autumn Moon Festival - Sept. 25, 2007
