The neighbourhood is bounded by Burrard Inlet, Nanaimo Street, Broadway, and Clark Drive.
The first railway, the Vancouver-New Westminster interurban, came through the area in the 1890s, helping to spur development.

Many immigrants, primarily from Italy, China, and Eastern Europe, began to call the area home after WWI.

In the 1970s, area residents banded together to stop a proposed highway that would have replaced Venables Street.
