2001 population: 61,046 (Source: Statistics Canada) "The Hub of the Maritimes" Moncton is a city in Westmorland County, in the province of New Brunswick. It is on the Petitcodiac River. The city was named for Robert Monckton, lieutenant-governor of Nova Scotia.

This is a bilingual city with a large Acadian population.
The Intercolonial Railway of Canada (IRC) was based here before being absorbed by the Canadian National Railways. Headquarters later moved to Toronto and then Montreal.
Economy has been focused on telecommunications in recent years.
