Newfoundland and Labrador is a province of Canada.

Capital: St. John's
The first English colony in what would become Canada was established here in 1611 by a group of Devon fishermen.

The coast of Labrador became part of Newfoundland in 1809. One hundred and forty years later, Newfoundland joined the confederation. The official name became Newfoundland and Labrador in 1964.

Quotes:
"With its own dialect, frequent insulating fogs, its own diverse traditions, and even its own time zone, thirty minutes off everyone else's, Newfoundland is connected to the mainland by airplanes that are often crippled by the thick fog, by storm-tossed ferries that must also be icebreakers to dodge icebergs like the one that sank the Titanic nearby, and by the political paper that, formally at least, made it a part of Canada."
-- The Canadians (1992)
Andrew H. Malcolm
