2001 population: 99,182 (Source: Statistics Canada) St. John's is in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The city is the provincial capital. The city was named for the feast day of St. John the Baptist.
In 1901, Guglielmo Marconi transmitted the first wireless signals across the Atlantic, between here and Poldhu, Cornwall.
The local economy plunged in the early 1990s with the collapse of the cod fishery, but has rebuilt through with oil production and tourism.
Ranked No. 1 among Canada's Best Cities for Business, by Canadian Business magazine, Sept-Oct 2005.
Received national attention for a December 1992 fire which raged through the city, destroying an entire block.
Filming location for 1992 movie, "The Boys of St. Vincent" and 2001 movie, "The Shipping News"
