2001 population: 9,470 (Source: Statistics Canada) Amherst is a town in Cumberland County, in the province of Nova Scotia. It is near the Brunswick border. The town was named for Jeffery Amherst, 18th-century commander of British forces in North America.

The town was settled first by Acadians, and later, by Loyalists.
Leon Trotsky was held at a POW camp here in 1917.
