2001 population: 550 (Source: Statistics Canada) Annapolis Royal is a town in Annapolis County, in the province of Nova Scotia. It is on the Annapolis and Allains rivers.
Former and merged community names include:
· Annapolis · Port Royal
Fort Anne was built in 1687 on the site of an earlier, smaller fort. French troops based here repelled British invasions in 1704 and 1707.
When the British captured the fort in 1710, they renamed it Annapolis. Annapolis Royal served as capital of Nova Scotia until the establishment of Halifax in 1749.
