2001 population: 20,339 (Source: Statistics Canada) Amherstburg is a town in Essex County, in the province of Ontario. It is on the Detroit River. The town was named for Jeffery Amherst, 18th-century commander of British forces in North America.
Fort Malden, established here in 1796, was a British base during the War of 1812.
