Gloucester is in the province of Ontario. The community was named for the Duke of Gloucester.
In 1969, the Township of Gloucester became part of the new Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton.
In 1981, the community became a city. The former city of Gloucester was absorbed into the new city of Ottawa in 2001.
