2001 population: 612,925 (Source: Statistics Canada) Mississauga is a city in the province of Ontario. It is on Lake Ontario. The city was named for the tribe.
Former and merged community names include:
· Clarkson · Cooksville · Dixie · Port Credit · Streetsville
In 1974, the town of Mississauga incorporated as a city, encompassing Port Credit and Streetsville.
Received national attention for a July 1980 nursing home fire, which killed 25 residents.
Filming location for 2005 movie, "Four Brothers"
Well-known residents have included:
· Cheryl Pounder, 2006 Olympics gold medal winner (ice hockey) · Donovan Bailey, Olympic gold medal winner
