2001 population: 70,876 (Source: Statistics Canada) Sarnia is a city in Lambton County, in the province of Ontario. It is on the Saint Clair River. One tradition says the community was named for Sir John Colborne, Governor of Canada who was once the Governor of the Channel Island of Guernsey, also known as Sarnia.
Former and merged community names include:
· Clearwater · Port Sarnia · Les Chutes · The Rapids
Oil was discovered to be a natural resource in this community and the oil refinement industry was important to local economy. Other major industries have included the petro-chemical and salt mining industries.
Received national attention for a 1953 tornado that killed 5 and caused more than $4 million in damages.
Filming location for 2002 movie, "Bowling for Columbine" and 1994 movie, "Renaissance Man"
Well-known residents have included:
