2001 population: 196,811 (Source: Statistics Canada) "Potash Capital of the World" Saskatoon is a city in the province of Saskatchewan. It is on the South Saskatchewan River. The city's name derives from a Creek word for "berries."
Saskatoon was founded as a temperance colony in 1883.
Major growth occurred after the Canadian Pacific and Grand Truck Pacific railways built new lines here in the early 1900s. Saskatoon became a city in 1906 when it merged with Nutana and Riverdale.
Ranked No. 7 among Canada's Best Cities for Business, by Canadian Business magazine, Sept-Oct 2005.
